August: A Month in Review
August was a busy month full of preparations for Stardale and our girls. While the girls were getting ready to start school we worked to prepare for the start of our program and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the end of September. Many wonderful activities took place and as always we are overjoyed to share them!
Launch of Truth and Reconciliation Event for 2023
On August 1 we launched promotion of our 2023 Truth and Reconciliation event; Reconnection, Reconciliation and Resilience - an event for hope for a better future. The community is coming together to collaborate in honour of Truth and Reconciliation. This event is an opportunity to discuss the effects of residential schools and their legacy and is open to the public. During the afternoon, it will include Elder's presence and teachings, a ceremonialist and a drumming performance from The Stardale Girls Drumming Group. Additionally, there will be an exclusive screening of an original film created by Stardale Women's Group - Warrior Women. Refreshments will also be served and a selection of Indigenous Owned Businesses will be showcased as part of the event market.
In the evening commencing at 7:00 (doors open at 6:30) , the event will continue with a special screening of the new film Bones of Crows moderated by George Canyon with Gerald Auger (Chief Wandering Spirit.) in attendance for a Q&A after the screening.

Spending Time in the Garden
The girls spent lots of Tim in the garden tending to it, enjoying cookouts and learning more about the land they’ve spent time in all summer long. They even enjoyed completing some of their art and craft projects out in the sunshine.
Beginning the Harvest
The girls harvested some of their wonderful veggies and got to see the ““fruits” of their labour. It all culminated in a wonderful garden party with some of Stardale’s closest supporters, volunteers and community members. This beautiful occasion included a ceremony for the girls and afterwards the sharing of food, music and kind words.
A Trip to the Zoo
The girls took a trip to the Calgary zoo to visit some of their favourite animals and do some exploring. The zoo is home to over 1,000 animals from around the world, including tigers, giraffes, penguins, and gorillas and the girls enjoyed seeing (almost) every one!
Making their Own Kind of Music
Prior to kicking off the drumming season the girls had the opportunity to make their own flutes. This included designing, creating and painting them. This was an extremely memorable and wonderful opportunity for the girls who participated to learn not only the art of crafting these instruments but the meaning behind their creation.
