Orange Shirts in support of Stardale Women’s Group
Melanie MacDonald and her children, Camdyn (14), Liam (11), Reese (10), Hannah (4) and Ava (4) decided to dye shirts as their school informed students that they could wear orange for the week instead of their uniforms, in light of the discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children buried on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
They were having so much fun dying shirts and we started talking about the fact that not many people have enough orange shirts to get through the week. They figured out their cost and decided to take pre-orders that day and make as many shirts as they could!
They let people know on their community Facebook page, as well as Melanie’s personal page. They were available for purchase at $15 a shirt. After their supply cost was covered, they were able to donate $9 from each shirt to a charity that serves Indigenous women and girls. With around 70 orders and a few extra donations, they finished their project with $721.00 to donate to Stardale Women’s Group!
Smack in the middle of their dying, they received an email that their school would have a name change effective immediately - from Langevin to Riverside. They are very excited about this long overdue change!
Thank you Melanie, Camdyn, Liam , Reese, Hannah and Ava.
We could not do the work we do without the incredible community support we receive. You truly warm the hearts of families and staff and make a difference in the lives of Indigenous youth and families, who without your support, would not have felt the promise of hope and reconciliation
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support.
